“PM Modi Mourns Passing of Former DRDO Chief V S Arunachalam”Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on Thursday over the demise of former DRDO Director General V S Arunachalam, stating that his passing has created a significant void in the scientific and strategic spheres.

Arunachalam, aged 87, passed away in the United States on Wednesday, as announced by his family.

In a message, Modi said, “The demise of Dr. V.S. Arunachalam leaves a substantial void in the scientific community and the strategic domain. He was widely respected for his expertise, dedication to research, and substantial contributions to enhancing India’s security capabilities. My heartfelt condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti.”

Throughout his distinguished career, Arunachalam served at institutions including Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), National Aeronautical Laboratory, and Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory.

Arunachalam’s leadership spanned the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and he held the position of Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister from 1982 to 1992.

His significant contributions to science and technology were acknowledged through awards such as the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award (1980), Padma Bhushan (1985), and Padma Vibhushan (1990).
