“NTPC Initiates Trial of India’s First Hydrogen Bus in Leh for Carbon-Neutral Future”

NTPC, the state-owned power giant, has initiated a trial run of a hydrogen-powered bus in Leh, as part of its efforts to contribute to Ladakh’s goal of becoming carbon-neutral. According to a company statement, NTPC is in the process of establishing a hydrogen refueling station, installing a solar power plant, and supplying five fuel cell buses for use on intracity routes within Leh.

On August 17, the inaugural hydrogen bus arrived in Leh, marking the commencement of a three-month period involving field trials, assessments of roadworthiness, and adherence to regulatory protocols. This significant undertaking is set to make history as the first deployment of hydrogen-fueled buses on public roads in India.

Situated at an altitude of 11,562 feet, the pioneering Green Hydrogen Mobility Project is situated alongside a dedicated 1.7 MW solar power plant, ensuring a consistent supply of renewable energy. The fuel cell buses have been specially designed to operate effectively in sub-zero temperatures and at high altitudes, showcasing a unique capability that suits the conditions prevalent in such areas.

As part of its commitment to sustainable growth, NTPC aims to achieve a Renewable Energy capacity of 60 GW by 2032, positioning itself as a key player in the green hydrogen technology and energy storage sector. The company is actively pursuing multiple decarbonization initiatives, including hydrogen blending, carbon capture, electric vehicle (EV) buses, and the development of smart NTPC Townships.
