Indian Cricketer Jaydev Unadkat Joins Sussex County Club for Limited Stint Ahead of World Cup

Significant Move: Indian Cricketer Jaydev Unadkat Joins Sussex County Club for Limited Engagement

In a momentous development, Jaydev Unadkat, a hopeful for India’s World Cup team, has made the decision to participate in three games for the Sussex County club. These three matches are slated for September. However, Unadkat’s chances of being selected for India’s squad in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 appear to be dwindling. Given the proximity of the ten-team mega event in India, selectors are unlikely to allow World Cup contenders to participate in red-ball stints in County cricket just days before the tournament. Consequently, Unadkat’s aspirations for the World Cup seem to be fading.

Sussex officially announced this decision on their website, revealing the signing of the Indian fast bowler. Unadkat, who was recently part of India’s Test and ODI squads against West Indies, brings a wealth of experience in red-ball cricket. With an impressive record of 383 first-class wickets in 103 matches at an average of 22.5, along with his best bowling figures of 8 for 39, Unadkat’s prowess is evident.

Unadkat will be available for selection in matches against Durham, Leicestershire, and Derbyshire, as mentioned in the Sussex press release. This move aligns with Sussex’s ambition to secure promotion to the first division. Unadkat has previously represented India in 22 matches spanning various formats.

Commenting on his decision to join Sussex, Unadkat shared, “I am eagerly looking forward to joining Sussex for their Championship matches in September. Observing the team’s recent success and engaging in a positive conversation with Paul [Paul Farbrace], it appears that I can significantly contribute to the team’s objectives. The English County Championship holds a remarkable legacy, and I wanted to seize this opportunity whenever it arose, and the timing feels right in my career.”

Notably, Unadkat’s Saurashtra teammate, Cheteshwar Pujara, has enjoyed an illustrious tenure with Sussex, achieving numerous milestones. Unadkat aspires to replicate Pujara’s success while representing the club.

Paul Farbrace, the head coach of Sussex, shared his excitement about Unadkat’s inclusion, stating, “We are thrilled that Jaydev will be joining us for the Championship period in September. His caliber as a bowler and his positive presence make him a valuable addition to our squad during this exciting phase of the season.
