Guwahati’s Upcoming Flyover: A Landmark Addition with Innovative Sports Complex Beneath

Assam’s Capital to Unveil its Longest Flyover with Innovative Sports Complex Beneath

Guwahati, the capital city of Assam, is gearing up to introduce its most extensive flyover by the end of August. The inauguration will be officiated by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, adding to the state’s repertoire of road flyovers and solidifying its role as the gateway to the northeast.

Distinguished by its unique features, the upcoming flyover spans an impressive length of 8.33 meters and takes the form of a railway flyover. What sets it apart is the incorporation of a sports complex beneath the bridge, in addition to two over bridges, making it a pioneering endeavor for the region.

The endeavor, constructed by a local contractor and dedicated to the Badminton Association of Jorhat, exemplifies the efficient utilization of urban space. The sports complex is equipped with proper lighting and seating facilities, serving as a dedicated space for young athletes to refine their skills. The walls and pillars of the complex are adorned with portraits of legendary sports personalities, serving as an inspiration to emerging talents.

It’s worth noting that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also holds the position of President at the Badminton Association of India. Embracing a novel concept, the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) is contemplating the transformation of spaces beneath flyovers into similar sports complexes.

The corporation revealed that the inspiration for this idea came from a women’s NGO. The mayor had previously mentioned that the initial focus would be on converting the vacant space under the AT Road flyover near Aathgaon into a sports complex. If successful, this concept could be extended to other flyovers in the city where suitable space is available.

This decision has been prompted by the observation that most spaces beneath the city’s flyovers remain either entirely unused or are minimally occupied as parking lots, while others have been encroached upon by unauthorized vendors.

In a concerted effort to establish Guwahati as the northeastern gateway, the Assam state cabinet has allocated approximately Rs 923 crore for a flyover project. Spanning from Handique College of Guwahati, located near Paltanbazar Railway Station, to the Noonmati area, the project has received official approval.
