Bill Gates Hosts Khan Academy CEO Sal Khan on Podcast, Discusses AI’s Impact on Education

Bill Gates, the co-founder of Microsoft and a renowned philanthropist, recently featured Sal Khan, the founder and CEO of Khan Academy, in an enlightening conversation on the second episode of his podcast series, “Unconfuse Me.” The discussion centered on the potential transformative effects of artificial intelligence within the realm of education.

For those not familiar, Khan Academy is a prominent American non-profit organization established in 2006, aiming to create a range of online tools to aid student learning.

During their dialogue, Gates posed an intriguing hypothetical question to Khan: “If you could magically master a subject without any study, what would it be?” Khan’s response wavered between quantum physics and piano mastery. Gates, reflecting on his linguistic capabilities, candidly acknowledged his proficiency in various computer languages while admitting his limitations to English in spoken communication. He expressed a desire to learn Chinese, emphasizing the importance of fostering understanding between the United States and China.

The conversation took a lighthearted turn when Gates inquired if Khan ever encountered confusion with Bollywood actor Salman Khan due to their shared last name. Gates playfully displayed a portrait of the Bollywood star. Khan humorously confirmed the mix-up, recounting instances from the early days of Khan Academy when fans of the actor mistakenly reached out to him, praising his mathematical skills.

Khan further revealed an interesting connection with Salman Khan during his 2015 visit to India. He shared an anecdote about participating in a live discussion with the Bollywood actor on national television, solely due to their shared name. Khan also disclosed his unexpected affinity for Bollywood movies, admitting that he watches more of them than people might assume. Intriguingly, he clarified that it was he who introduced his wife, hailing from Pakistan, to Bollywood films, not the other way around.

Responding to Gates’ query about his movie-watching language preference, Khan disclosed that despite his mother tongue being Bengali, he understands Hindi and enjoys Bollywood movies in that language. Born on October 11, 1976, in Louisiana to a Bengali Muslim family, Sal Khan’s full name is Salman Amin Khan.
